Winston rents the room above Mr. Charrington's antique store in order to have a safe, indoor hiding place within reach for both of them. The city is preparing for hate week and all working hours have been increased and Winston has not been able to meet Julia for some time.
Julia enters the room but carries luxuries that only the inner party can have. She brings real coffee instead of Victory Coffee with sugar instead of saccharine, and real bread and jam.
Julia says the inner party has access to all goods that come out of the war. She then puts on makeup she bought from the proles and looks much more like a girl to Winston, compared to her short hair and boyish overalls before.
Julia and Winston wonder if there could be a life were a man and a woman could love each other and have their own privacy.
Winston then says he is afraid of rats after seeing one enter the room. Then they look around the room of antiques. Julia sees the painting of St. Clement's Church and to Winston's surprise, she knows the song too. Winston tells her that he likes all the antiques in the room because they are a link to a past that wasn't altered by the Party. He looks at the coral he bought and imagines him and Julia inside the glass dome away from their current life.
