Winston was writing in his diary about the time he had sex with a Prole prostitute. Prole was Newspeak for Proletariat - the working people usually middle or lower class. The Government thought the Proles were no threat to it and so there was limited spying on them.
Winston says the Party considers sex to be a lower act and that it is determined to take the joy out of it and instead turn it into a process that would produce new Party members. Winston remembers his wife, Katharine. It was 9 or 10 years since they had separated but not divorced. The Party does not believes in divorced but allows separations if no children were ever produced. Katherine did not like human contact at all and Winston was not attracted to her at all. Marriages were approved by a special committee that made sure either partner was never attracted to other one.
Katharine was also an idiot, she knew no thought except that of the Party and Ingsoc. So Katherine did have sex with Winston but she did not enjoy it or hate it, she felt no emotion at all and this angered Winston.
During this time Winston wanted to have an act of rebellion as he was feeling tension with life. So he went to have sex with a prole prostitute, an ugly 50 year old woman, as an act of rebellion. After this Winston wrote everything down in his diary but still did not feel satisfied; he still had the urge to yell at the top of his voice.
