Book 3, Chapter 3

O'Brien explains the steps in Winston's "re-education". There are 3 steps : learning, reeducation, and acceptance. O'Brien then states that he help write "Goldstein's" book and that it was all nonsense. O'Brien said that Winston knew everything in that book already because it was designed that way. He also said the Proles could never revolt not in a thousand years, nor in a million. Winston believes that the Party rules the world with an iron fist for their own benefit but Winston is tortured for this thought. O'Brien explains the Party does not care for itself it desires only one thing - absolute power. Winston states the Party can not control nature and that the laws of nature dictate man not the other way around but O'Brien states the party controls the human mind which controls matter. He says they can convince every person that gravity does not exist and if everyone believes gravity does not exist, matter has been changed, as reality only exists within the human conscience. 
Winston tells that the Earth is older than man and that large reptiles ruled the Earth before man did. He says the Earth revolves around the sun and that the stars prove this through astronomy. O'Brien says fossils are just inventions of 19th century biologist and are lies and that the Earth is at the center of the universe and astronomy is a tool that will only be applied when useful, the laws of nature are changed when desired - that is the principle of doublethink.
O'Brien states the Party is eternal because they acknowledge their sole mission. The Nazis and the Soviets believed they seized power to simply give it away to create a Utopian world built on love. The Party, however, knows they will build a civilization that is built on hate alone. "Progress" before the revolution was to improve the lives of humans but "Progress" for the Party is to make life ever more worse. A man can obey another, but to have true control is to have him suffer. This world will refine itself until life is as miserable as possible for everyone.
O'Brien states that they have taken apart the trust and love between Family and Child, Man and Man, and Man and woman. No one loves each other because no one can trust anyone else. Soon children will be taken from their mothers at birth, like eggs from a chicken. The Party's scientists are already creating a method to remove the orgasm from sex to prevent any form of happiness that is not given by the Party.
Winston is forced to strip his filthy clothes and walk in the middle of 3 mirrors. There he sees that his body is weak and looks like a skeleton. His hair is falling out and his face looks like a skull. His skin has turned gray all over.
