Book 2, Chapter 5

Syme had vanished like Winston thought. People stopped talking about his absence after 3 days and when Winston had looked at the announcement board, where Syme's name had been, it was no longer there. Winston said that Syme had never existed at all at this point.
The heat of summer makes the Proles angry and the city comes alive in preparation for Hate Week. Julia and the fiction department are producing atrocity pamphlets and Winston was changing old newspapers that were to be quoted in speeches. Throughout the city there were demonstrations, parades, speeches, and everyone worked overtime. Also, more rocket bombs were dropped on London and there were no larger explosions on the distance.
Winston only cares about the room above the junk shop. Mr. Charrington tried selling Winston old artifacts whenever he came by. Julia and Winston lied together naked in the room together for the sake of being cooled by the summer breeze.
Winston tells Julia of his dreams of Revolution and O'Brien. Winston wishes Katherine could die so he could marry Julia and that he could be a prole and be disregarded by the party and do whatever he wanted. She says she only cares about the current generation and not the next. Winston says shes only a rebel from the waste down.
