Chapter 3

Winston was dreaming about his past and his family. When he was 11, Winston's family diapered from him but he remembered his mother as a tall statue-like silent woman with frail hair. His father was dark and thin and would always were dark clothes. He sees his sister in a blanket in the arms of his mother but can not remember her sister at all. Although he wasn't sure, someway Winston's family had sacrificed themselves for Winston.
After seeing his mother in Winston's dream; Winston dreams of Golden Country, a location with springy turf on a summer evening with plenty of sunshine. Also in this place, a girl walked towards Winston and tore of her clothes in front of him. However Winston was only overwhelmed that her simple gesture could destroy a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as if Big Brother and the Thought Police could all be destroyed in the process by this one gesture.
Winston woke up from his dream with the word "Shakespeare" on his lips.
After getting ready, a woman appeared on the tele-screen that gave exercise instructions. During this time Winston reflected and thought how there is no way of actually knowing your own past and much of his life was blank as it had no records attached to it. Winston did remember when an atomic bomb had been dropped on Colchester and he and his family hid in the subway system. In the tube Winston remembers an old man who said "we shouldn't of trusted them", but Winston did not know who we should not have trusted. The war from that point continued on but the sides were always changing. At this moment (1984) Oceania was at war with Eurasia and had an alliance with Eastasia, but only 4 years ago Oceania was at war with Eastasia and had an alliance with Eurasia. This fact only existed in Winston's mind as there was never any record of which side the war was with.
A few of the Party's slogans came to Winston's mind: "Who controls the past controls the future" and "who controls the present controls the past".
Winston does not remember when Ingsoc or the Party came into existence but he remembers that English Socialism was the oldspeak for Ingsoc and that the Party started a revolution that overthrew the capitalists of London.
Winston's remembering was interrupted by the tele-screen, the instructor told Winston through the tele-screen he should bend lower.
