In the Ministry, at the long hallway where Julia dropped the note Winston sees O'Brien walking behind him. O'Brien said he was a fan of Winston writing in Newspeak, he said that he has an early copy of the 10th edition of Newspeak and would let Winston borrow it. O'Brien also talks of a friend who he had recently forgotten - a reference to Syme which was a thoughtcrime and Winston thought of it as a signal.
O'Brien welcomed Winston to his flat to get the dictionary, O'Brien writes the address in front of the tele-screen. Winston thinks this will lead him to his death at the Ministry of Love, but is happy to have O'Brien's address as he believes it is a start of his dream of rebellion.
