Book 3, Chapter 5

Winston goes inside Room 101 with O'Brien and a few guards. The cell is empty except for a chair and a table. O'Brien explains that torture is not enough and that humans can accept pain - sometimes until death. But there is always something that can break a man. O'Brien holds out a cage filled with rats - the one thing Winston hates more then  anything. O'Brien explains this cage will go over your head and the door will open releasing these rats onto your face where they will tear it to shreds. He explains that if a baby is left alone for 5 minutes a swarm of rats will devour it, reducing it to bones. He says that rats will also attack the sick, dying, and the old - as if they can sense when man is helpless and ready to be killed like Winston is.
O'Brien states ,however, that there is something Winston can do or say that will prove his love for Big Brother but O'Brien can not tell what it is. Winston knows he can not escape the rats and that he can't even move his body. But he thinks that the only way to prevent getting attacked by rats is to put another human being in the place of himself. He thinks the only person he can do that to is Julia. As the Cage is placed on Winston's face he screams that Julia should take his place and that they can do whatever they wanted to her and torture her with Winston's permission. And at that moment Winston betrayed Julia by no longer loving her and by putting himself before her.
O'Brien is satisfied with Winston's betrayal and removes the cage and sets him free.
