Winston is crying next to Julia because he has seen a dream about his childhood and his mother. He remember the air raids on London and hiding in the tubes where there were gangs on the streets with Machine gun fire. He says there was never any food and Winston always demanded more. His father had disappeared before this and his Mother was willing to give Winston more food. But Winston always wanted more, he stole from the storage and from his sister. One day during the chocolate ration Winston takes the 2 ounces and runs off with it.
When Winston came back her mother and sister had disappeared without a trace. Winston said she could of been moved to a forced labor camp or a Reclamation Center (a colony for homeless children), like Winston himself.
Winston says the Proles are humans and he and Julia are not because they could be separated and killed at any time. They agree to continue meeting each other as confessing their crimes will not be betrayal and they'll still love each other.
