Book 3 Chapter 6

Winston is now free and sits at the Chestnut Tree Cafe a location famous for dismissed Party Members. He now drinks Victory Gin often even though he still hates the taste. He now accepts everything the Party says or does without even noticing it. He is watching the Telescreen for news on the African Front of the war. There is still a distinct smell of rats at all times for Winston, but he ignores it and on the table, on the dust he writes "2+2=5". Winston remembers Julia, who he is now sickened by and views the sex with her as an attack against the Party.
Julia and Winston had seen each other after they were released, they both said they betrayed each other and left because they no longer love each other. The song playing reminds Winston of a few happy memories of himself and his mother and of Julia but he believes all these memories are false and that he is making them up.
Winston cheers after the Telescreen states a strategic attack had created an overwhelming victory that had brought the war closer to an end. He then sees a poster of Big Brother on the wall and feels save and happy because of Big Brother. Winston starts crying now that he had found love for Big Brother and that he has "won" over himself.
