Chapter 7

"If there is hope it lies in the proles". 85 percent of the population in Oceania belongs to the proles, who are disregarded by the government. Winston was writing this down in his diary and hoped the proles would see their power and rise against Big Brother. At this time he heard yelling in the streets and thought it was the start of the revolution, but in the end it turned out to be people fighting over saucepans. "Why do people never fight about what matters", Winston thought.
According the the Party's history books the Proles were liberated by the revolution and before it, they were treated horribly by the capitalists. However, by the principles of doublethink, the proles had to be kept in subjection like animals, according to the Party. A Party slogan said: "The proles and the animals are free". And the proles lived with little government interference, most had no tele-screens and the civil police never cared about their lives. In fact London was filled with crime, prostitution, and drugs but since it all happened within the world of the Proles, no one cared. 
Winston goes onto read about the Party's history which says that life before the revolution was terrible, all the wealth in the world was in the hands of a few capitalists who were above the law along with the judges bishops, and the Pope. It mentions a law called jus primae noctis which states any capitalists could sleep with any woman that worked for him.
However, Winston could not conform that any of this was true or false, whatever the Party said was true and it constantly changed the past. If the party said 2+2 equaled 5, there was no way to disprove it as the Party would claim it had always equaled 5.
Winston now remembers a point where the Party had lied. In 1965 three members of the original revolution, Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were called traitors and were really Eurasian spies, but Winston remembers a photograph proving the 3 were really in New York at the time and couldn't be helping Eurasia. They admitted to their crimes anyways and were allowed to live, and so they meet in the Chestnut Tree Cafe. After their release they had started to conspire again and were charged for a number of new crimes and were executed.
This was evidence that Big Brother had changed the past and with this Winston could be correct.
The final command from Big Brother was to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears and believe in the Party, but Winston now believes freedom is the ability to observe the world and accept evidence as reality not what the government says is true. His exact quote: "Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else will follow".
